In times of crisis, how can HR support their employees?

It’s a cliché, but we are truly in unprecedented times. Anxiety and stress have eroded our patience, our productivity, and our focus. Either consciously or subconsciously, our mental guardrails have deteriorated. As Head of HR, I want to empower and support our employees without stepping out of bounds and wearing a hat that may not be appropriate. We need to direct employees to mental health professionals, foster an environment that supports open and vibrant discussion about mental health and work fatigue. But there’s an even deeper theme at play that requires attention. It’s the recognition that we as a population are frayed, and an appreciation for the productivity and work that’s done despite those conditions.

It’s important to be sympathetic and switch our focus from regulatory processes and hierarchy to developing and fostering relationships. Trusting colleagues between throughout your organization can also help when facing unexpected problems and obstacles. Much like a diverse workforce adds beneficial elements to a company, inter-department cohesion is vital to approaching the unknown.
